Jeff and I have been working on and off on these wood panels that we'll be tiling the newly finished sink with. Working large we go about this business in broad gestures and sloppy indifference getting all digits caked in cheap materials and collage crumbs. We then cut the panels down to 1 foot squares and let the compositions take shape indeterminately. Here are a few that we took pictures of today... More to come to be sure.

Titanic in Chicago

Sara is a nice girl. She visited the studio in a blitz today because she is so kind enough to pedal some of our zines at the Chicago zine fair. She is just that type of lady.

She blogs and interviews different artists in the city. Titanic was at our studio last year when we didn't have and running water and were looking up plumbers on craigslist. It is all because of Sara and "Yu" (the real name of our dedicated plumber) that we have running H20. Whats a print studio without water?

Visit Sara at the Chicago Zine FEST from March 12-13 if you are in the city, she has a cute smile. (*not seen in photo)

Artist Jim Verburg came by the studio today to do some printing for his upcoming show in Montreal.

I met Jim last year when I printed some of his work for an older show at Gallery 44. After some catching up we got some colour inspirations from a moldy Polka Saturday Night Record.

Jim naturally loved the cover design on some old exercise books Ginette found that we are printing into zines.

He also drooled over this cover from our collection in our loft.

New Halo Halo studio in the fashionably obscure Davenport & Dufferin area

I know this is probably old news to some of you, but maybe this post will serve as news to someone. Anyway - I hope it will at least break the silence of the past couple of months....

Halo Halo has been working on a new studio in an industrial garage in the virtually middle-of-nowhere location of Davenport and Dufferin for a while now. Steps away from the prestigious Galleria Mall, this as-of-yet unnamed pearl sports a larger than usual drying rack, massive light table, modular printing tables/flat file combos, salvaged cast-iron washout sink and a pleasure loft equipped with a growing VHS treasure chest.

Pictures of this sprawling piece of ingenuity can be seen below..

For over a year Meet Your Printmaker has been compiling a directory of independent print/printmaking studios around the world through its blog. Meet Your Printmaker shifts the emphasis away from the artist/printmaker and presents the printers/printmakers as a unique workforce … the groups and individuals who uphold and evolve new and traditional printing/printmaking techniques, whether in the form of commercial work, artist editions or retail products and who share their skills and educate their respective communities.

June Film Fort featuring the psychedelic claymation of Bruce Bickford.

New animated poster for the upcoming Film Fort/Primary Colors show June 13th at the Deleon White Gallery! Animated by Brett Long, sound by Andrew Zukerman, production design by Winston Hacking.

Film Fort and Primary Colors have teamed up to bring you THE WORK OF BRUCE BICKFORD godfather of psychedelic claymation. We will be screening a short documentary on Bruce by Brett Ingram "Luck of a Foghorn" 28 min. (2008) and Bruce's short film "Prometheus' Garden 28 min. (1988). The screening is a fundraiser for a future Toronto collaboration+screening of Bruce's newest film (Cas'l') to screen in the fall with a score+foley by Mike Smith (Muskox) and Andrew Zukerman (Gastric Female Reflex).

Brian Ruryk: the pedagogue of ping-pong percussion, the highway-martial of amphetamine sound aesthetic, the hairdresser of electro-shock patients; first show in years! sounds like a beercan avalanche in a pack-rat's mansion through warp-speed howdie-doodie?

D.A.D.S.: Zeesy Powers and Amy Lam reunite after how long? to stick it to the neglectful, coors-injected, testosterone-swilling mustache-men of the patriarch. You like this!

Battleship Ethel: Openly dexterous and from Hamilton, B.E. is a barefaced affront to the recent trend of not being able to play music and begs the question WHY DO WE LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT!?! Their sound is bigger than a precarious pile of diapers threatening to collapse on lunchmeat rendition of the moaning lisa.

Man Made Hill: The man with the most memorable phone number in the phonebook returns to demonstrate how to grapple a arpeggiated keyboard line, a drum machine and a host of derogatory pelvis munitions that marinate your brain in butter before blowing it out your third ear.

No, this isn't a photo of an old piece of toast on a film for a Jennifer Castle gig poster. Its a Magic Rub Eraser. Let me skin it: DEADWEIGHT! IS GREAT. Sandi from the Toronto printing duo, has been a guest artist in a couple my past Printing for Illustrators workshops, inspiring my students with her 11x17's. Prolific with the squeegie and spatula, she does high production in her kitchen! Sandi also doesn't own a pressure washer to reclaim screens, so she uses magic and was nice enough to explain her sorcery for us:

Magic Eraser | Unassuming Weapons of Cleanliness!

"Screen printing at home (or anywhere) can get messy. When you print in a small space you need to keep things clean and orderly so you can cook dinner or use your shower afterwards (as well as preserve your boyfriends sanity). I like printing at home - so this is where that muscular, bald man we know as Mr. Clean walks in with his magical eraser. When moistened, the eraser rids various surfaces of unsightly neon paint splashes with minimal physical effort. It sucks up stubborn bits of paint and emulsion from my screens into its porous foam body like it ain't no thang. Apparently the foam was originally introduced by BASF as a material for insulation and soundproofing and was later found useful for cleaning. They're only a couple dollars for a 2 pack at your local grocery/drugstore and have served me well as a cheap, quiet, space friendly alternative to using a power washer. Magic indeed!"

Kurosaka Keita is an independent experimental short animation filmmaker. In 1985 he debuted with his abstract motion graphics that used walls and the surfaces of stones as material. He has created numerous short animation works using diverse techniques such as drawing, photography and 3D objects.

His body of work includes commercials, manga, and illustrations. "Papa ga Tonda Asa [The Morning that Papa Flew], " the MTV Station ID that he created, has received international acclaim. He also actively holds exhibitions and workshops. His work has screened at various international film festivals and his collection of shorts, ‘The Collected Works of Keita Kurosaka’ (Three Volumes, Mistral Video), won awards at Annecy International Animation Festival, BDA International Design Awards, Ottawa International Animation Festival and Holland Animation Film Festival.

His recent work includes ‘Fuyu no Hi’ [A Winter Day], a collaborative work with 35 animators from around the world, which was released in theatres in 2003. He is currently working on his first full-length animation film for theater called ‘Midori-ko’.

One of my favourite artists, Michael Comeau, will be showing work at the upcoming HALO HALO LAUNCH. Prepare for sinister wigging out on his master of ceremonial pulls and fluorescent cobra secretion. After talking to Comeau recently he told me he has been recovering from repetitive stress. With southpaw stress syndrome, he has been DJing a lot more Sunday nights at The Ossington and drawing with his right hand.

This cobra plasmic sensation is hanging in my living room. Only seven of them exist, they were orignally costumes for a Kids on TV video. It hangs next to my exploding chair/cat tower/salvaged bauhaus home theater unit, that Jan helped me make.

"Angura" meaning underground, documents posters from the underground Japanese Theater scene in the '60's. Lots of the posters were so complex that they were not even finished in time to advertise the show defeating their purpose as promotional ephemera. It features some of my favourite printers including Tadanori Yokoo. Pick it up through Function13 in Toronto.

HALO HALO SCREEN PRINTING is a nomadic screen printing studio offering experimental workshops. It was created in 2008 by Jeff Garcia and Jan Avendano.

Jeff Garcia brings the energy of his domestic drawing and collage parties into the print studio, teaching his passion for screen printing since 2006. Teaming up with designer Jan Avendano, HALO HALO is the manifestation of a shared dedication to D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself) aesthetics with programming that focuses on open and collaborative production.

We named the studio after the multi-layered and colourful Filipino dessert, HALO HALO (pronounced hollow hollow) which comes from the Tagalog word "halo" meaning "mix". Our artists, processes, instructors and experimental workshops are as eclectic as the mixed and matched dessert itself.

Traveling from one studio to another we mix friends, strangers, and visual magicians, creating explosive installations and editions. We are currently hustling between two Toronto print studios.
